What to look for:
Make sure the container is designed to be airtight. Do NOT pour the cat food directly into the container like the manufacturer meant for you to do. Instead, leave the cat food in its original bag and place the entire bag into the storage container. For this reason, you'll need a bigger container than the manufacturer's description says (ie you'll need the 10-lb container for a 5-lb bag of food, the 25-lb container for a 10- or 15-lb bag of food, etc).
The reason why you should NEVER pour the dry kibbles directly into the container is 4-fold: (1) exposing the food to air speeds up the degradation process, and by pouring the food out, you're exposing the entire bag of kibbles to air; (2) the original food bag is designed to keep out moisure and UV-light much better than the plastic storage container does; (3) the oils/fats from the dry food will stick to the sides and bottom of the storage container and go rancid quickly, then contaminate your next bag of food unless you scrub/clean out the container very thoroughly between bags, which most people just won't do; and (4) you should keep the original bag which contains the expiration date as well as batch number in case there's a recall later (of course, you can theoretically save the bag after you pour the food out, but someone else in your family or yourself might see the empty bag and throw it out not knowing or not remembering that you still need it, or you could confuse which bag is which if you have mutliple pets on different food).
