What to look for:
Shallow dishes are preferred by some cats who do not like having their whiskers touch the side of the dish. Stainless steel, glass, or lead-free ceramic are all better options than plastic. If you want a ceramic dish, I would personally only trust human food-grade ceramic dishes made in the USA and specifically labeled lead-free.

What to look for:
Stainless steel or ceramic are better than plastic. Plastic might leach chemicals into the water and affect the taste of the water, and tends to harbor bacteria and other microorganisms more easily, especially once it gets some scratches on it inevitably. If you select a ceramic model, make sure the glaze is lead-free.
